2024 has proved to be a good year for Apple TV+ as it rolls out intriguing and highly anticipated films and series one after the other. With numerous titles upcoming in the following months, another name in its slate that fans globally are looking forward to is ‘Bread & Roses’.
An acclaimed 2023 Cannes Film Festival selection, the documentary film is based on the powerful resistance of Afghan women against the Taliban when Kabul fell under their violently misogynistic rule back in 2021. The entirety of the film follows three women in real-time, as they struggle and strive for their autonomous rights.
Set to premiere exclusively on Apple TV+ on June 21, the feature has been directed by Sahra Mani, famed director of the 2018 film ‘A Thousand Girls Like Me’, which is also centered around the struggle of Afghan women against the faulty judicial system as they fight for justice against their sexual assaulters.
‘Bread and Roses’ commences with a grainy cellphone footage that shows the Taliban marching from the mountains, into Kabul and on their way to strip the city’s women of most of their basic rights like freedom and education. With more such clips scattered throughout the documentary, the film gives a chilling never-seen-before-but-heard-all-around glimpse into the harrowing reality of Afghan women in Kabul.
Produced by Academy-award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, alongside the Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights advocate Malala Yousafzai, the documentary is set to send chills up your spines upon the first watch!
