A24 has dropped the first official behind-the-scenes clip of ‘Beau Is Afraid’, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Helmed by Ari Aster, the upcoming flick will take the viewers on a wild psychedelic ride from birth to death, with the leading man playing different versions of the protagonist.
In the recently released clip, Aster shares his experiences while filming his forthcoming surrealist black comedy horror project and what audiences can expect. “I’ve been thinking about this movie for, like, ten years. There’s a part of me that can’t believe we’re making this film,” the director said in the featurette.
Not many details are available about the ‘Beau Is Afraid’ plot. But we know Aster is bestowing an expanded version of his short film, Beau (2011), with this wacky A24 project.
The film revolves around Beau, a good man who becomes extremely anxious due to his distressed relationship with his dominating mother. He decides to visit his mother’s house after her death. However, his journey involves some odd and zany supernatural threats. Aster said this about the flick: “It’s like a Jewish Lord of the Rings, but he’s just going to his mom’s house.”
Ari Aster is known for delivering horror masterpieces like Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019). And ‘Beau Is Afraid’ is his third film, coming to theatres after a long gap of four years.
The upcoming Joaquin Phoenix starrer is the most expensive A24 project, with a nearly $40-50 million production budget. Additionally, it has a runtime of 179 minutes.
The latest BTS featurette also proves that the film will play with multiple genres and languages. For example, we see Phoenix standing on a stage, crashing through a door’s glass, galloping liquor at a grocery store, running maniacally, and so much more. But it is an Ari Aster project. And for some viewers, his name and forthcoming collaboration with the leading man are enough.
Besides Joaquin Phoenix, ‘Beau Is Afraid’ stars Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Denis Menochet, Zoe Lister-Jones, and many more performers. It will release in theatres worldwide on April 21. Stay tuned for more updates.
