Back when the casting process for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) was underway, author J.K. Rowling strictly demanded that Warner Bros. cast only British or Irish actors in the movie. More than two decades have passed, and times have certainly changed. We have some interesting casting news related to the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, as the show has found its Dumbledore—and it’s none other than John Lithgow.
According to Deadline, veteran actor Lithgow is in final talks to portray the iconic character Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The late Richard Harris first played Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies. After his passing in 2002, Michael Gambon took on the role and portrayed the character beautifully in the remaining films. Meanwhile, Jude Law has played the younger version of Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts movie series.
Rumours regarding the casting for HBO’s Harry Potter series are escalating as the show’s filming, set to begin in the summer of 2025, draws closer.
Now, let’s shift our attention to John Lithgow’s casting as Dumbledore.
While many fans may not mind Lithgow’s addition to the show, there will undoubtedly be a significant portion of the Harry Potter fan base that may not be pleased with this casting decision. Why? Well, first of all, he’s American.
Dumbledore is a quintessentially British character, and both actors who previously portrayed him in the films (Harris and Gambon) were British. Some fans will likely feel that casting an American actor would detract from the character’s authenticity.
Another potential concern with Lithgow’s casting is his appearance, which doesn’t quite match the traditional image of Dumbledore.
That said, Lithgow is an incredibly talented actor. He has portrayed a wide range of characters throughout his remarkable career. However, many of his past roles do not share similarities with Dumbledore’s persona. He has played villains, comedic characters, and even Winston Churchill (Netflix’s The Crown). Some might find it difficult to reconcile these past roles with the wise and gentle Dumbledore.
Nonetheless, Lithgow is also a highly versatile performer. He can transform himself into a vast range of roles. His acting range could allow him to bring different facets of Dumbledore to the screen, from his eccentric and whimsical side to his moments of sorrow and profound wisdom.
Finalising Lithgow as Dumbledore would indeed be a bold move by HBO and Warner Bros. However, it also suggests that the creators are willing to take risks and experiment with the show to offer a fresh interpretation of Hogwarts’ headmaster. Stay tuned for more updates.
