John Wick 5: Winston Actor Ian McShane Talks About Keanu Reeves’ Return
The talks about the development of John Wick 5 emerged back in August 2020. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer teased the possibility of Chapter 5 that year, to film it back to back with the fourth entry. However, the production house dropped the idea after some time. In 2022, helmer Chad Stahelski disclosed that he was unable to develop two meaningful and successful JW entries after Chapter 3, forcing him to focus mainly on the fourth film. Chapter 4 served as a satisfying conclusion to John Wick’s arc. Despite this, Lionsgate looks hell-bent on carving out the fifth instalment. Winston actor Ian McShane has talked about this scenario in a recent interview.
In his interview, Ian McShane opens up about his feelings for John Wick 5. He also states that Keanu Reeves needs “a good rest as long as he wants.” He also jokingly declares Reeves a vampire and himself, Vlad The Impaler.
“I think Keanu deserves a good rest as long as he wants. I spoke to him the other day, he’s resting for a while after the beating he’s taken over the last 10 years from all the assassins of the world. Let him rest until he decides to rise from the grave once again, or wherever he sleeps, because really, I’m his father, and he’s the vampire. So, I’m Vlad, The Impaler. There’s a whole horror film to be made out of this. Everything can zoom into something else. There’s no rules.”
Fans are divisive over whether Keanu Reeves should do John Wick 5. Considering how Chapter 4 culminated on an emotional and satisfying note, many fans believe that another entry is not needed. The next chapter could ruin John’s arc in the franchise.
Even if Lionsgate officially gives the green light to John Wick 5 in future, we do know what sort of plot the film will have. The fifth entry’s storyline must be strong enough to justify the character’s return to the franchise.
There are two ways through which this scenario can be dealt with. Instead of undoing Chapter 4’s ending, Lionsgate could bankroll a prequel project, focusing on John Wick’s early missions as an assassin. It could also explore how the protagonist started working for The High Table and became one of Winston’s close friends.
Another way we can get John Wick 5 is through undoing Chapter 4’s ending. Makers could disclose that Wick somehow survived his fight against Caine (Donnie Yen). Winston helped him in faking his death, giving him a chance to live a peaceful life. However, this case may reduce the impact of Chapter 4’s ending. Stay tuned for more updates.
