Joker: Folie à Deux, better known as Joker 2, is one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2024. Marking Joaquin Phoenix’s return as the Clown Prince of Gotham, the upcoming sequel from Todd Phillips also features the debut of Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. According to Gaga, fans will witness a very different version of Harley in the forthcoming sequel.
In her recent interview with Access Hollywood, Lady Gaga teased how her take on the iconic DC character was different. “You know my version of Harley is mine, and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters,” she said. “I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.”
Lady Gaga’s recent comments about her portrayal of Harley Quinn are supported by the film’s teaser trailer. The trailer strongly suggests a distinct version of Joker’s love interest, one who appears to be far more than just his sidekick. In fact, she has a whole new backstory this time.
Joker 2’s teaser trailer shows Gaga’s Harley in the Arkham State Hospital, which also has Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. Both instantly catch each other’s eyes, and from that very moment, their bond starts blossoming. She may aid Arthur in improving his behaviour, which could force authorities to reconsider his sentence. In the first film (2019), Arthur was arrested on the charges of murdering Murray Franklin (played by Robert De Niro) and wreaking havoc in Gotham City.
It seems like Harley will play an important role in bestowing Arthur with a new freedom. She may even try to manipulate him on many occasions, which would be the opposite of what Joker has done with Harley in the comics and the original Batman: The Animated Series.
The biggest change in Harley’s back story in Joker 2 is that she is not a clinical psychologist. Instead, she herself is a patient at Arkham. It will be interesting to see how Todd Phillips manages this storyline.
Joker: Folie à Deux will premiere globally in theatres on October 4, 2024. It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, and more. Stay tuned for more updates.
