When was the last time you saw a fanbase hating their favourite TV show with all their hearts? Let us remind you! How about the final season of Game of Thrones? That was really s*it. It seems the outrage HBO faced for completely messing up Season 8 has pushed the network to focus primarily on GOT prequels.
Just think about it for a minute. House of the Dragon is set nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Then there’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, another prequel to the original series. Plus, there are plenty of projects still under development at HBO, most of which also take place before the events of GOT. But that doesn’t mean the network has completely ignored sequel projects, including Kit Harington’s planned Jon Snow movie.
HBO’s head, Casey Bloys, has confirmed that they are “trying again” with the Jon Snow sequel movie. While it’s good to see Bloys still optimistic about the project, we have to ask ourselves: do we really need it?
The finale of Game of Thrones Season 8 wrapped things up conclusively, even if it wasn’t satisfying. It showed Bran becoming the new ruler and Jon being sent back to the Wall after his actions against Daenerys. Moreover, the war with the White Walkers was resolved before the finale, leaving little significance for the remaining episodes—apart from Daenerys’ abrupt descent into tyranny and Jon’s near-complete inaction. In fact, Jon did almost nothing throughout the entire season.
The series finale left a bitter taste for many fans. While a sequel could offer a chance for redemption, it cannot undo the mistakes of the past. The absence of several beloved characters, who met their demise during the original series, severely limits the narrative potential of a sequel.
In addition to the lack of key characters, it would be incredibly difficult for the Jon Snow sequel to introduce a threat as significant as the White Walkers. From the pilot episode, the White Walkers were teased as the ultimate antagonists in the original series. It’s almost impossible for the sequel project to replicate the same sense of looming dread and stakes.
As of now, the premise of the Game of Thrones sequel remains unclear. It can’t be a remake of Season 8 because the cast will likely age out of their roles by the time it hits theaters. It can’t be an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s unfinished books, as he hasn’t completed them yet. And it can’t continue the original show’s story because Benioff and Weiss already closed that chapter. In short, we don’t need a Jon Snow movie at all. Stay tuned for more updates.
