Hallyu is at its peak in current times. For those who don’t know, Hallyu is the colloquial term for the Korean wave – the phenomenal growth of Korean culture and popular culture, from music, movies, drama to Korean cuisine. In keeping with the Korean Wave, every streaming platform worth its salt is engaged in a race to snare the choicest Korean shows and movies for its subscribers. The leader among these, however, is without a doubt streaming giant Netflix. The streamer unerringly picks up the best Korean dramas to premiere on its platform.
Netflix’s latest acquisition is an intriguing show, titled ‘Divorce Attorney Shin‘. The first episode of the ten-episode series premieres on Netflix worldwide on March 4th. One episode each of ‘Divorce Attorney Shin’ will stream every Saturday and Sunday, with the finale episode set to release on April 9. ‘Divorce Attorney Shin’ will simultaneously premiere on the JTBC channel in South Korea.
‘Divorce Attorney Shin’ centres on Shin Sung-Han (Cho Seung-Woo), an accomplished pianist cum professor of music in a German university. The pianist receives an undisclosed shocking news, which compels him to travel back to South Korea, in order to hunt for the truth. In his quest for the truth, he works on becoming a lawyer, and finally becomes an accomplished divorce lawyer. As Shin Sung-Han works on his clients’ cases — some weird, some unfortunate — he approaches the truth that he has been seeking.
The Korean title of the series literally means ‘Sacred Lawyer’. The lead character’s name is literally a pun, coz Shin Sung-Han converts to “shinsunghan”, which means “sacred” in Korean. Also, the title is contradictory, as marriages are said to be sacred, and not divorces. Interestingly, Shin Sung-Han is an incredibly sensitive divorce lawyer, which adds an intriguing angle to the story.
Besides Cho Seung-Woo, ”Divorce Attorney Shin’ stars popular Korean actors Han Hye-Jin as Lee Seo-Jin, Kim Sung-Kyun as Jang Hyeong-Geun, and Jung Moon-Sung as Jo Jung-Sikh. ‘Divorce Attorney Shin’ is adapted from a webtoon, written by Kang Tae-Kyung. The series is directed by Lee Jae-Hoon, and screenplay is written by Yoo Young-Ah.
