Despite a sloppy marketing campaign and fans losing faith in Prabhas, Kalki 2898 AD was a hyped film. Indian audiences have had fairly little exposure to their own desi sci-fi, and Kalki fills that spot. Despite all the backlash, people are eventually watching it.
The reviews are mixed, but the heartbeat of a film like this isn’t its storyline or plot but the overall experience. Though there are talks about how Kalki’s VFX team ‘stole’ certain ideas, fans are loving the experience. After the major disappointments of Brahmastra and Adipurush, the audience was losing hope in Indian VFX.
But Kalki 2898 AD restores that faith.
Nag Ashwin shines as the visionary of the film, but Amitabh Bachchan is the golden goose of the project. Though several aspects of the film are really fumbling, the overall experience has been strong.
And, when it ends its theatrical run, Prime Video will be waiting for it. Amazon Prime Video just acquired the rights to Kalki 2898 AD and it will definitely be a good asset down the line. Though in most cases, Netflix does have a soft corner for Telugu films, this time Prime Video has the upper hand—a statement from the OTT giants.
There is no approximate release window, but you can expect a solid box-office run, and after that, Prime will surely give it a cool-off period. At least, that’s what the intelligent step should be.
