The hotly anticipated reunion of Indian cinema luminaries Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam has finally got a name! The film, first announced a few days ago, has been titled ‘Thug Life’. The title was revealed amidst much fanfare this evening on social media. Producers Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies and Kamal Haasan’s RKFI chose to reveal the title of the film a day before Kamal Haasan’s much-talked-about 69th birthday, which happens to be tomorrow. The Kamal Haasan – Mani Ratnam film was initially labeled ‘KH234’, which is Kamal Haasan’s 234th film.
The makers also launched an extended first-look teaser for ‘Thug Life’, along with the title reveal. The teaser shows Kamal Haasan donned in the tattered garb of an old man, cloaked in a sedate shroud. But of course, it’s only an eye wash. Soon the man transforms into a ferocious and seasoned warrior, when attacked by hulky goons, thirsty for his blood.
Kamal Haasan’s character in ‘Thug Life’ is named Rangaraya Sakthivel Naicker. Interestingly, Sakthivel Naicker was the name of the protagonist in Kamal Haasan – Mani Ratnam’s Nayakan too, triggering speculations of the two movies being connected. The actor nails the action scenes in the Thug Life teaser, amping up fans’ excitement for the film.
Before the Thug Life title reveal, the makers made several exciting announcements during the day. Joining Kamal Haasan in Thug Life are Dulquer Salmaan, Trisha and Jayaram Ravi as co-leads. Nasser and Abhirami make up the rest of the cast. A R Rahman has scored the music for Thug Life.
Thug Life will mark the coming together of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after an eye-popping 36 years. The duo had last worked together on the cult film, Nayakan. Mani Ratnam is fresh from the success of the two Ponniyin Selvan films, while Kamal Haasan is basking in the success of the blockbuster Vikram.
