Kangana Ranaut is coming up with her new directorial film, ‘Emergency’. The movie is centred around Indira Gandhi (India’s first female Prime Minister), talking about her career in politics, her reign as the PM, the time of Emergency and her assassination. The movie was to be released on 6th September 2024, but recent news confirms that the film has been delayed unconditionally due to the film facing issues pertaining to censor certification. As per Kangana, the film is deliberately being delayed and the censor board is forcing the team to cut several important sections of the film as they deal with quite sensitive topics. But, is it the complete truth or is delaying the film a strategy to create a buzz for it?
The film deals with several controversial topics which are very sensitive to Indian politics and governance. This makes the film an easy target for the CBFC. The film’s theme makes it a bit hard for it to get a censor certificate. Also, as it deals with sensitive issues, it is quite certain, the movie will be edited to be presentable. The movie was announced to be released in November 2023, then was shifted to June 2024, and then to September and now, the film has been delayed again. As per sources, the recent delay was due to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) filing a petition against the film. Due to several delays, the film already has received a push and is receiving a great deal of attention.
Question arises, why was the film release announced before getting a censor certificate? Also, why is the film being delayed multiple times even after being made, just due to certification issues? And why this petition from SGPC was not filed a year earlier when the film was first announced? The only possible answer is- to create a buzz. Before the recent delay, Kangana addressed this issue on her social media handles saying the CBFC is deliberately attempting to stall the movie and asking her to cut almost all the important parts of the movie. All this points towards a planned strategy that is giving Kangana and the movie a buzz in the media. Her last few films have been disasters in the box office and now she is taking this step to ensure the film goes hit.
This idea of creating buzz through controversy can be evident from several other films as well. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s few recent films went through controversies prior to their release and a huge buzz was created around them ensuring their success. Same has been true for several other films as well. Kangana might be walking on the same road. ‘Emergency’ has now been stalled multiple times, as a result, the hype for the movie increases with each delay as is the media buzz. This can result in the success of the movie.
