It was probably a miscalculation from both parties. What was supposed to be one of the biggest programs on Indian television has now turned into a mediocre watching experience. Even the fans aren’t supporting it, and The Great Indian Kapil Show is being looked down upon.
When it was on television, the average viewership was around 50 million. Though the definition of comedy is evolving, The Kapil Sharma Show focused on family-friendly comedy, making it suitable for dinner table viewing. But its Netflix days were as cloudy as can be.
Firstly, Netflix has a much smaller subscriber base in India compared to SonyLIV, Hotstar, or Prime Video, which could have been much more profitable. Secondly, India doesn’t have as many smart televisions, so dinnertime won’t be filled with Netflix viewing.
Also, as the audience is already consuming content alone, fans expected some edgier comedy, but what they got was completely disappointing. The jokes basically need a time machine because they are definitely from the ’90s.
Though it benefited from Netflix exposure, even going global with Ed Sheeran and tapping into the hip-hop fanbase with Badshah, the viewership still fell. Now, Netflix is officially ending this journey.

Don’t worry, they aren’t ending the show once and for all.
The Great Indian Kapil Show will be back with a second season, hopefully with some major rethinking. From edgier jokes to guests with whom the fans connect, the show needs a lot of improvements.
