Venice Film Festival chief Alberto Barbera has just announced the star-studded lineup for the 2023 Venice Film Festival, which will be the 80th edition of the prestigious global film event. Jostling for space among big names like Wes Anderson, Roman Polanski, Sofia Coppola and David Fincher is a relatively unknown Indian name – that of rising Indian filmmaker, Karan Tejpal. Karan Tejpal directed film ‘Stolen’ is all set to have its world premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival soon.
The Venice Film Festival is slated to take place from 30th August to 7th September, 2023. The film festival will take place under the shadow of the ongoing twin strikes in Hollywood – the Writer’s Guild strike and the SAG – AFTRA led actors’ strike. The twin strikes means that major writers and actors will stay away from the Venice Film Festival. Hence, no celebrity glamour to spice up proceedings at Venice this year.
Coming to Karan Tejpal’s ‘Stolen’, it is the lone Indian film in the lineup at the Venice Film Festival. The film stars actors Abhishek Banerjee, Shubham, Mia Maelzer, Harish Khanna, Shahidur Rahaman, among others. The film is written and directed by Karan Tejpal, who’s earlier worked as an assistant director on movies such as 3 Idiots and Lage Raho Munnabhai.
‘Stolen’ will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in its ‘Orizzonti Extra’ section, also known as ‘Horizons Extra’ in English. As per Karan Tejpal, his work aims to capture the complexity of changing times while instilling a sense of hope and understanding. His stories shed light on the harsh realities of our society, exposing the vulnerabilities of the powerless and the erosion of trust in the social systems that are meant to safeguard us. In ‘Stolen’, he delves into the unwavering strength of the human spirit that rises against these fractures.
