Finally! It’s happening!!
The highly anticipated Karthick Naren directed Tamil film ‘Naragasooran’ is getting a direct-to-OTT release, during Independence Day – Weekend. ‘Naragasooran’ is the second film of the Karthick Naren “Thriller Trilogy” (the first one being ‘Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru’ AKA D-16) and it will be available for streaming on the OTT platform – SonyLIV. This movie will serve as a spin-off to the first film in this thriller series.
This movie has been a long time coming – 3 years in fact. The movie was expected to release back in May 2018, but due to budgetary constraints and tensions between then-producer Menon and director Karthick, it fell through. The film got postponed multiple times thereafter. The movie was expected to release during the festival of Vinayagar Chathurthi which fell through. In February, the promotion for the Telugu version of the first film ‘D-16’ happened, so the promo and release for this film had to wait. The director-screenwriter himself got another project to work on later and the film continued to be on hold.
Then, of course, Covid-19 happened. The producer-director duo then started to explore alternate release options – meaning directly through OTT platforms. Unfortunately, this too fell through and the movie reached 3 years of unforeseen, nightmarish limbo when finally an OTT platform came knocking. The streaming rights for ‘Naragasooran‘ ended up being bought by Sony, by the end of May 2021. The release date was the “main thing” pending regarding the Karthick Naren “helmer”.
We are now waiting for a new trailer. There is one already available on YouTube though, check out the link for that promo at the end of this article.
However, since the movie is finally releasing, we expect a new trailer to release, featuring a “SonyLIV” watermark, and hopefully a few extra scenes to amp up the hype. But we are excited either way.
The Tamil film ‘Naragasooran‘ will premiere on SonyLIV, during Independence Day – Weekend on 13th August 2021.
