One of the most critically raved Malayalam films of last year ‘ Avasa Vyooham’ is soon to have its streaming release. The film festival darling also won ‘Best Film’ award at Kerala State Film Awards recently and won FIPRESCI and NETPAC awards at 26th IFFK. According to strong sources, SonyLiv has bagged the streaming rights of the film and it’s official date of release will be announced soon.
Krishand, an adjunct faculty at IIT Bombay wrote, directed and produced Avasa Vyooham, a rashomon-esque documentary feature film about a man named Joy who seems to have a magical connection with nature.Throughout the film, his identity is concealed in mystery. And the film is carved as a hunt for a rare amphibian species, i.e Joy himself. The production of the film spanned around four years and was shot in brief schedules. Avasa Vyooham is based on a place called Puthuvype, which is part of a beautiful isle that also has large mangrove forests. Krishand opined that Avasa Vyooham is a superhero like film. Unlike the marvel clan of superheroes, Joy aka Frog-Man is more like an unbreakable being akin to mermaids. With strong analogies in writing and also a documentary like treatment, Krishand has made a statement with the movie regarding the man-animal conflict.
It is said that prosthetics of the frog man is inspired from the movie ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’. Cinematography of Avasa Vyooham is done by Vishnu Prabhakar and Ajmal Hasbulla’s music is supposedly a character in itself. Nileen Sandra, Geethi Sangeetha and Zhinz Shan co-star Rahul Rajagopal who plays Joy in the film. Avasa Vyooham is one magical fantasy striding roads of realism and surrealism that would remind one of Kazansky’s Amphibian Man (1962) and Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water (2017) in the message it tries to convey. If you haven’t heard of the film till now, we hope we convinced you enough to wait for the film to stream on SonyLiv.
