The KGF franchise has established itself as one of the most successful Pan-India projects with an engaging storyline and some amazing background scores. Whilst the 1st part was a runaway hit the anticipation for KGF 2 has already reached such a place where fans have literally demanded a national holiday on its release date.
The Yash starrer is all set to hit theatres on 16th July 2021 and everybody related to the project is super excited about this. Apart from Yash, one can see many others such as Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tondon, and Prakash Raj who play pivotal parts in this film.
With many developments taking place, the makers of KGF 2 have demanded a humongous fee of 80 crores for their overseas distribution rights. We know that Farhan Akhtar and Rites Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment have brought the Hindi rights of the film for a startling 90 crores.
While this film is one of the most anticipated releases of the year especially after the theatres have just returned to proper functioning one is forced to think whether this kind of a price tag is feasible for the distributors. This fact becomes even more worrying once you take into consideration that the first instalment of the film collected only close to 11 crores in the overseas market.
With a growing population slowly shifting its sight towards the OTT platforms one has seen a huge surge in mainstream films taking the OTT route in recent times. The OTT platforms are willing to shell out huge money to acquire the rights of such films and that has only put films in a much better position when it comes to negotiating a fee.
While most of these platforms enjoy a worldwide audience with easy global distribution traditional distributors in the cinema industry still have to make a lot of things world before they can even see a glimmer of profit from a movie. While the likes of Amazon Prime and Netflix have literally spent similar sums acquiring titles that didn’t even have the kind of hype that KGF 2 brings along with it, one can’t help but think that it has made the makers of this film bolder and in a position to demand a much heftier fee than what they did last time around because even they know that they won’t have to go too far to get a stellar offer from any of the leading OTT platforms.
