Karan Johar’s much-awaited chat show, ‘Koffee With Karan‘ will soon be back – this time in an only digital avatar on Disney Plus Hotstar. And it promises to be bigger, better and more beautiful than ever. This morning, Karan Johar took to his social media to announce that Koffee With Karan Season 7 will premiere on Disney Plus Hotstar on July 7. For fans of the lively and witty chat show, Koffee With Karan, it’s happy news on a Sunday morning!
Koffee With Karan will soon be back. However, there will be a vast difference in the earlier seasons of the show, and the upcoming Koffee With Karan Season 7. And the difference is all because of the changed scenario of Indian cinema in the post-pandemic era.
Those who’ve watched earlier seasons of Koffee With Karan will know that the chat show keeps a single-minded focus on stars from the Hindi film industry, aka Bollywood. The show is notorious for ignoring celebs and film stars from the South film industries, however big or well-known they may be. Koffee With Karan has never – and we repeat – never invited any film star from the South film industries ever to grace the show.
Don’t believe us? Chew this – in a mind-boggling total of 135 episodes of Koffee With Karan, spread out over 6 well-received seasons, no South film star has graced the red couch synonymous with Koffee With Karan. The only time a few South celebs did appear on Koffee With Karan was Prabhas, Rana Daggubatti and S.S Rajamouli back in 2018 in Koffee With Karan Season 6. The trio appeared on the show to promote their upcoming film Baahubali 2, produced by—wait for it—Karan Johar’s own Dharma Productions. Having the trio promote Baahubali 2 on Koffee With Karan was more a good business move for Karan Johar, and less about any sense of inclusivity for the Bollywood Baahubali.
All that is a thing of the past —or more, a thing of the pre-pandemic era. The post-pandemic era is a different ball game altogether. The blockbuster success of films from the South, not to mention the poor showing of Bollywood films, means that no talk show or its hosting platform can afford to sideline the South film industries any more. The Indian film industry is changing — for the good. Long considered also-rans, the South film industries and their stars have come into their own. They are loved and respected by film buffs across the country, who would love to watch them steal the spotlight on Koffee With Karan.
And guess what? The tentative guest list reflects the changed status quo of Indian cinema like none other. This season has a likely four episodes devoted especially to South film stars. Ram Charan and Junior NTR, Rashmika Mandanna and Yash, Vijay Deverakonda, Samantha Ruth Prabhu are some of the South celebs slated to grace the iconic Koffee With Karan couch. There’s also talk of Allu Arjun making it to the final guest list of Koffee With Karan Season 7. If that does happen, Koffee With Karan S7 will have an unprecedented 5 episodes of South celebs sharing their quirks and wit on Disney Plus Hotstar.
Yes, Koffee With Karan Season 7 will certainly be different – in a super-cool way!
