Nobody does romantic comedies today like South Korea. Be it K-Dramas or movies, they do know well to flutter our hearts and generate butterflies in our stomach. Netflix Korea’s latest offering is ’20th Century Girl’, a romantic comedy that would stream on Netflix India and worldwide from October 21st, 2022. The makers dropped official trailer of the film recently and looks like we are in for a mushy romance featuring beautiful looking people.
Set in 1999, a year before the end of the 20th century, the story follows Na Bo-ra, a 17-year-old high school student with a very bright personality. Her best friend Yeon-du has a crush on Baek Hyun-jin, a boy from the same school whom she knows only by name. Yeon-du has to go to U.S. for a heart surgeru. She asks Bo-ra to keep eye on Hyun-jin and find out everything about him while she is away from South Korea. Initially, Bo-ra decides to get close to Hyun-jin’s best friend, Poong Un-ho in order to keep a track on Hyun-jin. But life had different plans for her. She falls in love, a sweet, pure but heartbreaking relationship. Years later in the 21st century, news about her first love revives her teenage romance that she thought she had moved on from.
Directed and written by Bang Woo-ri in her feature directorial debut, 20th Century Girl stars Kim Yoo-jung, Byeon Woo-seok, Park Jung-woo and Roh Yoon-seo in major roles. This cinematic depiction of friendship and freshness of first love from a feminine pov and based in the backdrop of 1999 is bound to be that much needed calm in our fast moving lives of today.
