Aamir Khan Starrer ‘Laal Singh Chaddha‘ released at the theatres on 11th August to extremely poor reception. Not to forget the boycott calls and negative press that followed the film. Right before one could take the film off from our memories, Netflix dropped the film on streaming on 5th October. Quite expectedly the reception the film has been getting post its streaming release is quite heartwarming.
Laal Singh Chaddha has been consistently trending at #1 on Netflix India trending list by dethroning Netflix Original Plan A Plan B. This is not surprising considering the fact that it’s an Aamir Khan starrer. The acceptance and love his films have been getting since years from the audience one way or the other is unmatchable. One could expect the film to make bigger streaming records on the streaming giant because after all it’s an Aamir Khan film after 4 years. Families and non-theatre going audience would prefer to watch the film at the comfort of their homes as well. If we could go back a bit, another box office bomb of the year ‘Shamshera’ turned out to be the most watched Indian film of the year worldwide on Amazon Prime Video. One could expect similar records for Laal Singh Chaddha as well because it’s an even better film overall.
Although the film did become a box office bomb, one can’t ignore the many factors that led the film to a fate this tragic. Besides the relentless negativity and boycott calls, Laal Singh Chaddha is a humane drama, and also an adaptation/remake of the American Original Forrest Gump(1994). The movie-going culture has rapidly changed post-pandemic. We have Colossally lost the weekend audience today with the OTT revolution too. People aren’t flocking to the theatres for anything less than a big scale spectacle. And Laal Singh Chaddha was none of that. However, it has everything that streaming audience would collectively embrace. The reception the film has been getting post Netflix release asserts the same.
At the end of the day, Laal Singh Chaddha is a film made with lot of love, heart and warmth. It deserves a chance and deserves to be watched. A film that evokes and ushers nothing but compassion and affection should be cherished. Hopefully, the film gets its due on Netflix given how theatres banished the film mercilessly.
