Lamb (2021), the acclaimed A24 folk horror film directed by Valdimar Jóhannsson, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Sjón is streaming exclusively on Mubi India.
The movie is about a secluded couple on a remote farm in Iceland who discovers a mysterious newborn amongst their sheep. This discovery shakes them but they still decide to raise the child as their own only to face the consequences of defying the will of nature. This eerily horror outing from Valdimar Jóhannsson also won the Prize of Originality at Cannes. Aided by a terrifying performance from Noomi Rapace, this fable defies and bends genres as it handles the psychological landscapes of motherhood.
An international co-production between Iceland, Sweden and Poland, the film stars Noomi Rapace, and marks Valdimar Jóhannsson’s directorial debut in feature space. Rapace and Béla Tarr act as executive producers. After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival 2021, the film was released in Iceland on 24 September 2021. It was selected as the Icelandic entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy awards.
This oddly unsettling, reminiscent of ancient folk-tale shivery film makes for a weekend watch. Catch it on Mubi straightaway!
