Director Abhilash.S’ Malayalam film “Konnappookkalum Mambazhavum” is set to release on the OTT Mainstream, today (8th August 2020). The film heads into a small list of feature films to have released directly on OTTs in the Malayalam langauage, after the Jayasurya starrer “Sufiyum Sujathayum” and Vipin’s “Musical Chair”.
“Konnappookkalum Mambazhavum” is Abhilash’s first directorial feature length film. He has previously directed 12 film shorts including “Kulukki Sarbath” from the anthology film “Onnum Onnum Moonu” which had a theatrical launch in 2015. The 41 year old is also a school teacher who teaches social studies.
This movie has been in the pageant circuit for a year now and was featured within the International Children’s Film Festival of Kerela (ICFFK) in Thiruvananthapuram last year. The film was intitally set to feature on the silver screen but the pandemic has made the filmmakers to go for an OTT release instead.
“Konnappookkalum Mambazhavum” is for children and it is a story told through school kids. It is set during the school vacation time period in a village of Kottayam. Abhilash tries to address some challenges faced by children these days, especially with the added pressure of academics at a young age which affects their time to play.
Abhilash has themed the movie around the idiom “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy”. He says that his experience as a teacher has helped him in understanding some of the problems his students face and it helped in developing a script from making his own observations of them, both inside and outside his classroom.
The plot of the film follows a group of school children who have finished their exams and are entering their summer vacation. They want to have fun and enjoy their holidays but their parents force them to join academic-classes even during the summer break. The film explores the impact this has on the kids. This film is supposed to be a realistic ‘remedy’ according to Abhilash.
