Anime fans rejoice as Netflix and Legendary Television are together bringing two new anime series for you. The latest additions in the Netflix anime library are based on Legendary’s ‘Skull Island’ and Square Enix’s ‘Tomb Raider’ global franchise.
Monsterverse franchise by Legendary is bigger than any single monster and as per Netflix it is an expansive story universe of multi-layered experiences centering around humanity’s battle to survive in a world that is under siege by a catastrophic new reality – the monsters of our myths and legends are real.
‘Skull Island’ is the newest addition to Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise. As per the official logline, it is a thrilling animated adventure series that follows shipwrecked characters desperate to escape the most dangerous place on Earth—a mysterious island home to prehistoric monsters, including the greatest titan of them all, Kong.
‘Godzilla’ (2014), ‘Kong: Skull Island’ (2017), ‘Godzilla: King Of The Monster’ (2019) are the earlier films of Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise and together they have accumulated over one billion dollars at the box office internationally. The latest film that will be joining this brilliant franchise in March 2021 is the much anticipated and an absolute epic, ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’.
Netflix’s ‘Skull Island’ will be written by Brian Duffield (Underwater, The Babysitter), who will also executive produce it alongside Jacob Robinson, under his company Tractor Pants. Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania, Blood of Zeus) is the animation house behind ‘Skull Island’.
Coming to ‘Tomb Raider’, the second anime series announced by Netflix. It began as video game 25 years ago and has since then led to a global franchise encompassing movies, merchandise, comic books and now, a stylish animated series.
The logline for Netflix’s Anime series ‘Tomb Raider’ reads, “Lara Croft, one of the video game world’s most iconic adventurers, makes her anime debut in an all new series. Picking up after the events of the highly successful Tomb Raider video-game reboot trilogy, the animated series will chart the globetrotting heroine’s latest, greatest adventure. Twenty-five years after her first game appeared, Lara continues to explore new territory.”
Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja) will serve as writer and executive producer for the Netflix anime series ‘Tomb Raider’. Other than Huo, dj2 Entertainment Founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (‘Sonic the Hedgehog’), Stephan Bugaj and Howard Bliss; Jacob Robinson, under his company Tractor Pants will executive produce the series.
Tomb Raider video game series, until now, has sold over 81 million copies and garnered a treasure chest worth of awards. ‘Shadow Of The Tomb Raider’ is the newest game in the franchise, receiving numerous “Best of” nominations and awards. The Tomb Raider video games are developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montréal, and published by Square Enix.
Legendary Television (‘Lost In Space’, ‘Carnival Row’) is also working with Netflix for upcoming original anime series ‘Pacific Rim: The Black’. Its future projects include ‘Dune: The Sisterhood’, based on one of the most popular science fiction franchises of all time, for HBO Max; ‘Paper Girls’, based on Brian K. Vaughan’s best-selling graphic novel, and Lightyears, a one-hour drama series, for Amazon; and ‘Debris’, the sci-fi drama from J.H. Wyman and starring Jonathan Tucker and Riann Steele, for NBC.
