The last few days were quite turbulent for many fans of Horror supremo Mike Flanagan. From the cancellation of his ‘Midnight Club’ at Netflix after the first season to the news of him leaving his long and successful collaboration with the streamer to signing a contract with competitor Amazon, there’s been a lot going around. And finally, the ‘Midnight Mass’ creator has revealed his first project for Amazon, which also happens to be his dream project!
It was in talks with Deadline that Mike Flanagan and his long-time collaborator Trevor Macy revealed the news. Their first for Amazon Studios is to be a grand affair- the TV adaptation of Stephen King’s book series ‘The Dark Tower’. The show is reportedly being envisioned on a large scale, with it expected to go on for five seasons and to be followed by two feature films!
It is to be noted that the literary work has already had a film adaptation starring Edris Alba and Matthew McConaughey in 2017. While the Flanagan-Macy duo are still holding on strong to the horror genre they are known for, the series is touted to be a multi-genre work, with a mix of dark fantasy, science fantasy, and even Western. The project would be Flanagan’s third adaptation of the work of Stephen King, with the other being two feature films- 2019’s Doctor Sleep and 2017 Gerald’s Game (based on the 2013 novel and the 1992 suspense tome, respectively), both directed and written/co-written by Flanagan.
Flanagan also revealed that Amazon is aiming at improving its content in the horror genre, which doesn’t come as a shocker considering rival Netflix is riding high on the wave of its recent successful horror outings most prominently ‘The Watcher’ which clocked impressive viewing stats. And what better person to bridge that need for Prime Video than the master storyteller in the genre?
The series’ pilot episode is reportedly already written. With the scale Amazon is providing to its creators( read Rings Of Power and Boys), what better platform to bring the book series to life than Amazon? For those who are complaining about Prime Video having a smaller content library, watch out. From all the big-budget series and films being ordered by the studio to the creators the company is bringing on board, we are in for a lot of good content from the streaming giant in the coming days.
