Lokesh Kanagraj’s highly anticipated action thriller movie ‘Leo’ starring Vijay and Trisha in the lead roles has finally hit the big screens today. Earlier, the grapevine was abuzz with speculations that the film was a remake of David Cronenberg’s action thriller movie ‘A History of Violence’, which came out in the year 2005 and featured Viggo Mortenson in the lead role. Now that ‘Leo’ is out in theatres, all the speculations have been laid to rest.
As per the latest reports, ‘Leo’ is indeed inspired from David Cronenberg’s critically acclaimed movie ‘A History of Violence’, which was based on a 1997 graphic novel of the same name. Because the Tamil language Indian film reportedly starts off with the acknowledgement by the makers that it has been inspired by the said Hollywood film.
Now, the question is: Is ‘Leo’ a worthy tribute to the parent film ‘A History of Violence’? Let’s find out what some of the early reviews for the film suggest.
Some of the film’s early feedback points out that despite a power-packed and perhaps the career-best performance by Leo’s lead actor Vijay, the film itself is not up to the mark, especially the second half. And that it has failed to live up to the sky-high expectations and hype.
On the other hand, a segment of fans is quite impressed with the film along with Vijay’s performance. But another segment of film enthusiasts is quite disappointed with the movie and the hashtag #LeoDisaster has even started trending on a social media platform. It remains to be seen how well ‘Leo’ is eventually received by the audiences and critics and whether the film sets the box office on fire or not.
As far as Leo’s comparisons with David Cronenberg’s ‘A History of Violence’ are concerned, we think living up to the high standards set by the parent film might be a difficult task for the makers of ‘Leo’, considering the initial feedback. At least from a critical appreciation point of view. But we should ‘never say never’.
