We have all seen Hansal Mehta’s magically addictive and highly rated web series ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’ on the SonyLIV streaming platform with Prateek Gandhi adeptly essaying the titular role. The series was based on the phenomenal rise and equally swift fall of the infamous stockbroker.
Fans of the show might also be aware that Hansal Mehta is also reportedly directing the next installment of the ‘Scam’ franchise that will be based on the stamp paper scam of 2003. The series is titled ‘Scam 2003: The Curious Case of Abdul Kareem Telgi’.
However, not many people might be aware of yesterday’s release of a new show called ‘Money Mafia’ by streaming platform Discovery Plus. With the apt tagline ‘India’s King Cons’, the show will reportedly comprise eight episodes divided into two seasons. As the name suggests, the episodes will ostensibly feature money-related, white-collar crimes.
And the first episode of the series namely ‘Fake Stamp Paper’ revolves around the Abdul Kareem Telgi stamp paper scam of 2003. The sub-30-minute episode follows the story of a fruit seller who made his way into printing counterfeit stamp papers. The scam value is alleged by some to be a whopping Rs.20000 crores. The official episode synopsis says: “Few scams created as string ripples in India as the stamp paper racket did.”
You can watch the first episode of ‘Money Mafia’ that is currently streaming on the Discovery Plus streaming platform in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and English languages. You need to be a Discovery Plus premium member to watch it though. Their monthly plan will cost you Rs.199/- and their more economical annual plan would set you back by Rs.399/-.
A similarly themed documentary-styled show ‘Bad Boys Billionaires: India’ had also gripped the attention of OTT audiences when it started streaming on the Netflix OTT platform last year. The show comprised three episodes and narrated the stories of Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Subrata Roy.
