New OTT entrant in India Lionsgate Play has announced its second Indian Original series, a young adult romcom, titled ‘U Special’. The just-announced show boasts a stellar ensemble cast, comprising some of the most talented Indian actors. Sumeet Vyas, Arjun Mathur, Parambrata Chatterjee, Rukshar Dhillon, Taaruk Raina, Gopal Datt and Ahsaas Channa, are some of the names revealed by Lionsgate Play.
U Special will be directed by celebrated writer-director Akarsh Khurana, who’s fresh off his Netflix hit, Mismatched. U Special is set in the backdrop of a cheerful and vibrant university campus, populated by students from all over India. The narrative centres on college students and their light-hearted shenanigans, along with their romances, highs and lows, dreams and aims, passions and desires. However, the plot takes a grave turn when it casts an eye on one of the most notorious, corrupt and widespread academic scams ever to hit the country.
Lionsgate Play, the over the top streaming service of international broadcaster STARZ, entered the highly competitive Indian OTT space in the second half of 2020. By commissioning an Indian Original slate comprising of shows and movies conceived and executed wholly in India, and encompassing Indian ethos, Lionsgate Play hopes to make a place for itself in the crowded Indian market.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Lionsgate Play had announced its first ever Indian Original series, a remake of its own hit show in the USA, ‘Casual’. That show will be directed by Kunal Kohli, and stars Lara Dutta and Prateik Babbar as the leads.
