In a fantastic piece of update for fans of monster-centric entertainment, it has just been confirmed that you’ll soon be able to witness a live-action version of a series featuring the popular character King Kong on your screens and it is in the works at Disney+. Tentatively titled ‘King Kong’, the series would focus on the origin story of the iconic ape besides delving into the mysteries of his home Skull Island. The Disney+ project is currently in early stages of development.
Although a live-action MonsterVerse show featuring Godzilla and other Titans is already being developed at Apple TV Plus, the Disney+ ‘King Kong’ series is the first time a live-action streaming show is being set in the Kong universe. The series will be based on the works of the character’s original creator Merian C. Cooper and will additionally draw inspiration from author-artist Joe DeVito’s new novelizations.
The Disney+ King Kong live-action series is being written by Stephany Folsom, who had previously lent her writing skills for the upcoming show ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ and is the creator/showrunner of Prime Video’s sci-fi drama series ‘Paper Girls’. Besides, the acclaimed Australian filmmaker James Wan (Director – Saw, The Conjuring, Aquaman) will also act as one of the executive producers of the Disney+ ‘King Kong’ series.
It’s mention-worthy that King Kong’s first on-screen presence was portrayed in Merian C. Cooper’s directorial film of the same name in the year 1933 and the movie gained a cult following over the years. In the post-2k era, Peter Jackson revived massive interest amongst audiences after he directed the critically and commercially successful ‘King Kong’ remake in 2005.
Thereafter, two more films namely ‘Kong: Skull Island’ and ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ featuring the legendary monster came out in 2017 and 2021. An untitled ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ sequel is also in the works with Dan Steven in the lead role. Stay tuned to Binged for the latest updates on the Disney+ ‘King Kong’ live-action series.
