Founder and executive chairman of Amazon, Jeff Bezos founded ‘Blue Origin’, an aerospace manufacturer and sub-orbital space flight services company in 2000 and now in 2021 the company is ready to make history with its first human flight to space.
The flight will take place on 20th July, 2021 where Blue Origin’s New Shepherd rocket will take four civilians to space for the first time. Their journey will stream live on Amazon Prime Video.
Amazon wrote, “On July 20th, four civilians will go to space and come back astronauts. Witness @blueorigin make history with their first human flight.
Watch it live on Amazon Prime Video.”

Though it’s a first for Blue Origin and it’s New Shepherd rocket, it isn’t the first time people are going to space. In fact last Sunday on 11th July, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic Unity 22 flight did something similar.
Given the small time gap between these flights there has been talks about the difference between the two. In response Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin released a pictorial explanation regarding the same while also sparking a debate.
From the beginning, New Shepard was designed to fly above the Kármán line so none of our astronauts have an asterisk next to their name. For 96% of the world’s population, space begins 100 km up at the internationally recognized Kármán line. pic.twitter.com/QRoufBIrUJ

The issue had arisen over deciding the boundary between earth’s atmosphere and outer space. According to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin they are the ones taking people to outer space in real as they will fly above the Kármán line (100 km or 62 miles above sea level) while Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic flew just around 80 km or 50 miles.
Though there is no internationally accepted law deciding the limit for the beginning of outer space, U.S. recognizes the altitude of 80 km as the boundary of space. On the other hand, Kármán line is an attempt to define the boundary between outer space and earth’s atmosphere and it begins at an altitude of 100 km above the mean sea level as defined by Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI).
