2021’s ‘Dune Part 1’ was met with huge praises from both critics and the audience. One of the best movies by director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049), the movie was a huge hit for streamer HBO Max. The world-building of the film franchise had left fans curious. Now, it seems we would be getting to see more of the Dune universe, this time via a prequel series.
The series has been titled ‘Dune: The Sisterhood’ and will take place 10,000 years before the ascension of Timothee Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. It would follow the story of the Harkonnen Sisters, as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind & establish the fabled sect: the Bene Gesserit. Though the powerful Bene Gesserit was introduced in the movie, it is the series that will explore them in detail for the non-readers of the books.
Emily Watson (Chernobyl) and Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter) will portray Valya Harkonnen and Tula Harkonnen, respectively, the formidable Harkonnen Sisters, who rose to power in the Sisterhood, a secret organization of women. It is this sisterhood that will go on to become the Bene Gesserit that we see in the movie.
Denis Villeneuve will be executive producing the series for HBO Max and Legendary Television, the TV arm of Legendary which is behind the current film franchise. The show is currently in development and no release date or year has been announced yet. The news has fans excited with many expressing that the scenes of the Bene Gesserit were one of the best parts of the film.
If the upcoming Dune Part 2 does as well as expected, more of the universe will be explored and more films made, confirmed the director. With a dedicated fanbase for the books and now with excitement even bigger due to part 1 ‘s success, Dune has all the potential to be the next big connected universe in the making.
