Just a few days back on 4th February, the legendary film Pakeezah completed 50 years. It is an immortal love story whose making story is no less filmy than the film itself.
The cult classic took 14 years to complete and we know the result that came. There is absolutely no film in Hindi cinema that is even close to Kamal Amrohi’s Magnum Opus in terms of beauty, cinematography and even music to a great extent.
The reason being, Kamal Amrohi never wanted to make Pakeezah for commercial purposes. It was just a whim of his brain that said, Shahjahan made Taj Mahal for Mumtaz and I will make Pakeezah for Meena Kumari.
But Saregama and Yoodlee films officially announced that they will make a series on the love story of Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari.
But they have also announced that the series will be fictional. How both of them go together is kind of baffling but it is happening nonetheless.
Saregama is a famous music company that had the complete monopoly of Hindi songs till the eighties. Needless to say they hold the rights of Pakeezah’s most opulent and sought after part, music.
But the bigger question is Why. Why should someone make a story about a couple who are not here in the world to tell us their true feelings? Especially when we have the immortal film Pakeezah that is a gift of their love to cinephiles.
The answer to such ethical questions is never easy to get.
Regardless, the series will go on floors in 2023 and we are not yet aware of the platform that it will land upon.
A love like none other ❤️
