We believe you all know what has happened with Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. The early critical reactions have literally butchered the Man of Steel helmer’s latest directional feature. It currently has a ‘rotten’ score of 24% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 42 reviews. Many of you may not know that Snyder originally pitched Rebel Moon as a separate Star Wars movie to Lucasfilm many years ago. The studio showed no interest in his idea, forcing the filmmaker to develop his own franchise with more focus on violence, sex, and cursing. Now, it seems like Lucasfilm made a brilliant decision at that time.
There is no denying that Zack Snyder is one of the most polarising directors in Hollywood. Many have criticised his directing abilities and inability to yield good performances from his actors. But he is, undoubtedly a visionary and knows how to mesmerise his audience with beautiful visuals and exhilarating action sequences. Those who knew about Snyder’s history with Lucasfilm obviously compared Rebel Moon with the Star Wars movies.
The majority of critics have criticised Rebel Moon’s “uninspired” and “derivative” plot. In addition, the film’s acting performances, lack of characterisation, and worldbuilding inconsistencies received poor reviews from critics.
The reason why Lucasfilm did not select Snyder’s vision makes sense now. At this point, the Star Wars franchise cannot afford a divisive space opera flick after what happened with Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Yes, the film grossed over a billion at the global box office. However, it also turned out to be one of the most divisive movies in the franchise’s history.
Given the significance of the Star Wars franchise and the recent critical reception of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, it seems like Lucasfilm made the right decision in ditching Snyder’s vision. The director’s polarising directional style has always divided critics and audiences. It would not have been beneficial for a grand franchise like Star Wars to afford a movie like Rebel Moon. Star Wars needs more universality and stability than ever before. Stay tuned for more updates.
