Paramount+ set to adapt a Sonoro podcast “Toxicomania” to a movie, a popular podcast which tells the fictionalised story of Dr. Leopoldo Salazar Viniegra lived in Mexico city who is a brilliant psychiatrist who led revolution for legalizing drugs. Luis Gerardo Mendez will be playing as Dr. Salazar according to reports.
Sebastián Hofmann will direct the film and David Gaitán will pen the script. Hofmann is a Mexican film maker and Luis Mendez who is known for “Narcos” has already work together with him in the movie “Time Share”. Toxicomania is set in 1940’s Mexico city and the podcast was a instant hit becoming the most successful Spanish language fiction podcast hitting the number one spot in Mexico.
Toxicomania portrays the effort of Dr. Salazar who came up with a weird idea of legalizing drugs. Salazar was an established psychiatrist and he treated drug addicts differently than other doctors. As expected, many other doctors opposed his unorthodox methods, especially his efforts to legalize drugs. But to everyone’s surprise the president of Mexico, General Lázaro Cárdenas greenlights his idea. This eventful journey was the gist of the podcast and this story will hit the silver screen very soon.
The story which revolves around drug cartels in North America has become the subject of many movies and series. “Narcos” which streamed in Netflix was the latest entry in this genre but “Toxicomania” will mark a whole different take on the lore of drugs in Mexico.
