The Madras High Court has rejected the plea by producers Lyca Productions to restrain Indian 2 director Shankar Shanmugam from directing any new film until he completes the shoot of Indian 2. The Honorable High Court has also rejected Lyca Productions’ contention that Shankar should furnish a security of ₹170.23 Cr if he wants to work on other films before completing Indian 2. ₹170.23 Cr is the amount spent by producers Lyca Productions on the making of Indian 2 so far.
Shankar and Lyca Productions have been at loggerheads over the completion of the long-delayed Indian 2. The shoot of the Tamil film has been dragging on since January 2019. It is only 60% percent complete, with 100 days of shoot still remaining. Covid-19 restrictions, Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, etc delayed the shoot in recent times. But now that shoot restrictions have been lifted in Tamil Nadu and other places, Lyca Productions wants Shankar to finish off the shoot of Indian 2 before taking up any new film. Shankar, however, plans to start the shoot of his new film, and return to Indian 2 in a few months.
Fed up with the unnecessary delay, the producers of the film, Lyca Productions, filed a case against director Shankar in the Madras High Court seeking a ban on him to direct any other film before the completion of Indian 2. Now that the High Court has given its verdict and rejected Lyca’s plea it remains to be seen what next step the production house will take.
Indian 2 is the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster hit ‘Indian’. It has Kamal Haasan reprising his role from the original. Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, Bobby Simha, Priya Bhavani Shankar and Jisshu Sengupta are the new cast added to the sequel. Much-in-demand composer Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music of Indian 2.
