Two blockbuster South Indian films helped cinema halls and theatres in South India (and around the globe) rack in cash with their excellent entertainment value. The aforementioned films, ‘Maanaadu‘ and ‘Kurup’, have done well in the international box office – with both films making close to Rs. 200 crores between them. And now, both films are heading towards OTT for streaming – in the case of ‘Kurup’, the film is already streaming.
Both films weren’t what many expected to be super hits. Granted, ‘Kurup‘, the Malayalam feature film, always had a chance – but we could not be sure until the film dropped in cinemas. This movie follows India’s longest wanted criminal, Sukumara Kurup. In the Tamil film, ‘Maanaadu’, we follow a young man and a cop who are both stuck in a time loop. They are forced to relive the same day – which also happens to be the day that the CM gets killed. While this concept is new to South Indian cinema, the film surprised audiences and critics alike.
‘Kurup’ has made close to Rs. 100 crores, if the latest reports are to be taken as fact, while ‘Maanaadu’ has made over Rs. 90 crores. We expect the Tamil film to make more money since this film was released in theatres later than ‘Kurup’ (by almost 2 weeks). Also, with ‘Kurup’ now available for streaming, the Malayalam movie might not stay in theatres for long. ‘Maanaadu’ also has an additional reason for staying in theatres – the high production cost. According to reports coming out of the film production’s camp, ‘Maanaadu’ cost the studio close to Rs. 125 crores. The production team will be hoping to earn back the film cost before dropping the film on an OTT platform – unless they are offered something very lucrative.
‘Kurup’ is currently available for streaming on Netflix. ‘Maanaadu’ is expected to start streaming this month on SonyLIV. We are waiting on official confirmation for the release date.
