Sony pulled out all the stops to make Madame Web swing at the box office but failed miserably. Unsurprisingly, the Dakota Johnson starrer has found a new life on Netflix – the saviour of flop movies.
Premiering on May 14 on Netflix, Madame Web quickly rose to prominence on the platform. It secured a spot on the Top 10 (movies) list and even cracked the top five most-streamed movies within its first week (May 13 – 19, 2024). The film currently ranks second in terms of viewership, with over 10.8 million views and accumulating more than 20.8 million hours of viewing. In the top spot, we have Brooke Shields’ pathetic rom-com ‘Mother of the Bride,’ which has garnered over 25.4 million views and more than 38.1 million hours of viewing despite receiving horrible reviews from critics.
Back to Madame Web! This S. J. Clarkson directional is undoubtedly the worst entry in the SSU so far. It barely managed to equal its budget ($80-100 million) with its worldwide collection of $100.3 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, Madame Web is the lowest-rated SSU entry ever, with a disastrous 11% critic score, based on 246 certified reviews.
This scenario highlights the rising power of streaming services and how much they have changed the way we watch films nowadays. Madame Web is a complete disaster, yet it managed to find a new life on Netflix. Many factors have contributed to this scenario. First, we cannot just ignore the tag of Marvel that is associated with Madame Web. The character is quite prominent in the comics. But Sony did her dirty. Secondly, Netflix offers a viewing experience that prioritizes comfort and convenience. Viewers can relax at home, rewind, pause, and watch at their own pace, making it a more accessible alternative than the conventional theatre experience.
You guys can watch Madame Web (at your own risk) on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
