The stay order on Maharaj is now over. As we informed our readers, the movie was to be released on the 14th of June. But, then the circumstances forced the movie to be on a stay order. The stay order was slapped till the 18th and thus there is a new update.
The Gujarat High Court has decided to delay the release of the film “Maharaj,” starring Junaid Khan, for another day.
This decision comes after Yash Raj Films (YRF) and Netflix suggested that the court should watch the movie before making a final decision.
This decision was made in response to a petition filed by several followers of the Vaishnavite Pustimarga sect, who are devotees of Lord Krishna. The petitioners argue that the movie contains “scandalous and defamatory language” that could harm the reputation of the Pustimarga sect. However, the makers did not release any trailer or teaser. Lord knows how the petitioners came to know about scandalous and defamatory language.
They also mentioned that the film’s content could breach the code of ethics under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
“Maharaj” is based on a historical libel case from 1862, where religious leader Jadunathji sued social reformer Karsandas Mulji. Mulji had published an article accusing Jadunathji of having sexual relationships with his female followers.
Regardless, what is the solution to the problem? The advocates representing YRF and Netflix India proposed a solution.
They suggested that Justice Sangeeta Vishen watch the movie to understand the context better. They also questioned the delay by the petitioners in bringing the case to court. Senior advocate Mihir Joshi, representing the petitioners, agreed to the court viewing the film.
So, the Gujarat High Court will watch the film to understand the problematic aspects.
He clarified that the petitioners do not wish to block the movie entirely. Instead, they want to ensure that the movie does not harm the dignity of their religion or community. The court will now watch “Maharaj” and then decide on the case. We will keep you posted on the updates.
