On the occasion of the 138th Birth Anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, it has been announced that filmmaker Sandeep Singh has reportedly signed acclaimed director Mahesh Manjrekar to direct a film titled ‘SwatantraVeer Savarkar’. The film is reportedly being produced by Sandeep Singh and Amit B Wadhwani.
The film’s producer Sandeep Singh took to Twitter to make an announcement about the film. The post was marked with the following words alongside the film’s poster: “Azaadi ke itihas ki puri baat abhi janna baki hai! Miliye #SwatantraVeerSavarkar se bahut jald…” In the film’s poster, it was mentioned that the film’s writers are Rishi Virmani and Mahesh V Manjrekar while the film’s music will be given by Hitesh Modak and Shreyas Puranik.
Born on May 28, 1883, in Maharashtra, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was a well-known Indian independence activist and politician. The prominent personality had an extraordinary life from his days in the infamous Cellular Jail, to his restricted freedom in Ratnagiri district, to being the leader of the Hindu Mahasabha and many more important events in his life, until his sad demise in February 1966.
Apparently, this is not the first time a film based on the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar or his on-screen portrayal is being made. Previously, Indian actor Annu Kapoor had essayed the role of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in the 1996 epic historical drama film ‘Kaalapani’. Set in 1915, the Malayalam film was directed by Priyadarshan and also featured Mohanlal, Prabhu Ganeshan, Tabu, and Amrish Puri in prominent roles.
Thereafter, a film directed by Ved Rahi based on the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was released in the year 2001. The titular role was essayed by Shailendra Gaur while other cast members included Surendra Rajan, Navni Parihar, Mrinal Kulkarni, Pankaj Berry and Tom Alter amongst others.
It remains to be seen what aspects of the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar will be portrayed in the upcoming film being directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. Keep watching this space for further updates in this regard.
