Netflix has one of the best UIs among all the streaming companies. It is stable, user-friendly, attractive and above all, familiar. But, all that may go through a major transformation.
Netflix is gearing up for a major redesign of its TV app to make it easier for viewers to find and enjoy content. According to The Verge, the streaming giant’s new design will simplify content discovery and reduce decision fatigue, helping users spend more time watching and less time browsing.
One of the key changes is the introduction of dynamic tiles that replace the current static ones. These new tiles will expand as you hover over them with your remote or cursor, providing information about genre, year of release, and number of episodes. If you linger on a tile, a short clip or preview will play to help you decide if it’s something you’d like to watch. But it has a downside as well. It will eat more data than usual. If you are surviving on limited daily data then it would be a little more difficult.b
Netflix’s senior director of products, Pat Flemming, explained that the goal is to make it easier for users to determine if a title is right for them without the hassle of scanning the home screen.
The redesign also includes moving the sidebar menu from the left side of the screen to the top. The new menu will feature options like “My Netflix,” “Categories,” and “New and Popular.”
Netflix plans to test this new design with a select group of subscribers on smart TVs and other streaming devices. If successful, the redesign will be rolled out to more users worldwide. Let’s see how it comes out to be.
