The Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) is back! And this time, it is up and running during its regular April time slot, unlike last year, which was pushed to October (postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic). Don Palathara, the Malayali filmmaker made us all proud when his film, ‘1956, Central Travancore‘ made it to the esteemed MIFF festival last year, but he has done it again this year too, with his experimental film ‘Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam’ making it to the short list of 13 international movies selected to for this year’s MIFF.
‘Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam’ is an experimental film of the first kind, for the Malayalam film industry. The entire 85-minute long movie was shot from one camera, which was set in a single position without any cuts – meaning the whole movie was made in a single shot. The entire movie takes place in a car and has only two actors talking to each other in the entire movie. The movie did not have a theatrical release, instead, it premiered at the International Film Festival of Kerala on 21st February 2021.
‘Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam’ is also the only Indian movie to make it to the international list of movies, featured during MIFF. Since Indian movies only started appearing on MIFF from 2017 onwards, it’s safe to say that Don Palathara is the first independent filmmaker to make it to back-to-back MIFF festivals in a row. We hope that he can make it a hat trick of films next year.
‘Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam’ is a story following a young couple who are driving to a clinic to check if they are pregnant. There are other internal and external problems faced by the couple which they try and talk through, in an effort to save their relationship.
