The superhit Malayalam movie ‘2018’ is now selected as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards of 2024. The jury was headed by Kannada filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli and 2018 was selected from a list of various Indian films like ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’ etc.
The full name of 2018 is ‘2018: Everybody Is A Hero’. The movie stars Tovino Thomas in the lead role and also has actors like Asif Ali, Lal, Narain, Kunchacko Boban and Aparna Balamurali. The movie tells the story of a young man who leaves the Indian Army with a fake medical certificate because he is afraid. He gets his redemption when Kerala is flooded with terrible rain and he takes the role of a hero to save many lives in the crisis.
‘2018’ is an example of wonderful execution and storytelling and had immense admiration both from critics and audiences. It was directed by Jude Anthany Joseph and the screenplay was written by Jude Anthany Joseph and Akhil P. Dharmajan together. It is one of the most powerful survival thrillers that India has ever made. Tovino Thomas and the supporting cast have given wonderful performances and the cinematography of the film is handled by Akhil George.
Kerala is slowly having a monopoly over India’s selections of Oscar entries. 2021 had seen the selection of ‘Koozhangal: The Pebbles’ and in 2020 Pellissery’s ‘Jallikattu’ was sent for the Oscars. India has not seen any nomination in the Foreign Language category since ‘Lagaan’. We pray for the nomination as well as win for ‘2018’ in the 2024 Academy Awards.
