Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s ambitious and star-studded film ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ was finally released in theatres on 30th September. The movie has purportedly breached the 250-crore mark at the box office and is still going strong.
Besides its commercial performance, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ has achieved another feat. The movie has recently entered the coveted list of IMDb’s top rated Indian movies of all time. As of now, the film holds an impressive IMDb user rating of 8.6/10 based on around 17k votes.
On the same IMDb top 250 Indian movies list, the top ranked title is R. Madhavan’s ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ which was released in theatres earlier this year. Other Indian movies from the year 2022 on the said IMDb list include ‘Karthikeya 2’, ‘Thiruchitrabalam’, ‘Sita Ramam’, ‘777 Charlie’, ‘Vikram’, ‘Major’, ‘KGF-2’, and ‘RRR’, amongst others.
Recently, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ had also registered the highest box office per screen count of a whopping $8036 per theatre at the US box-office during the last weekend. Moreover, the visual opulent film boasts of an 87% appreciation score on the movie ticketing portal BookMyShow based on more than 92k ratings.
‘Ponniyin Selvan – Part 1’ is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name and chronicles the account of the early days of Arulmozhi Varman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Directed by maestro filmmaker Mani Ratnam, the movie features an ensemble cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, and Prakash Raj, amongst others. After the film’s theatrical run, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ will start streaming on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform.
