Marakkar Trailer: A Visual Spectacle for a Potential Blockbuster

With just two days left for the grand theatrical release of the highly anticipated Mohanlal starrer period war movie ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’, the makers have just dropped the film’s trailer. Marakkar is being touted as the most expensive Malayalam film ever made and the movie’s scale and visual opulence are aptly reflected in its trailer.

The trailer features Mohanlal in a never-seen-before avatar despite his prolific acting career spanning more than four decades. An ultra-short snippet of an aerial view of the battle scenes shown (both on land and on water) in the trailer looks quite good and aesthetically choreographed.

A few seconds after the initial build-up, the trailer leads to Mohanlal’s roaring entry. The film’s period look, supported by top-notch VFX, seems to have been created well by the makers. Having said that, how well the story has been told can only be ascertained after the film’s release on 2nd December.

Co-written and directed by veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan, the historical war film ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ features veteran actor Mohanlal in the titular role of Kunjali Marakkar IV. Set in the 16th Century era, this period film is based on the fourth Kunjali Marakkar aka Mohammed Ali, who was the legendary admiral of the fleet of the Kozhikode (present-day Kerala) kingdom monarch – the Samoothiri.

‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ would narrate Marakkar’s epic warfare against the Portuguese. Besides Mohanlal, Marakkar also features an ensemble cast that includes Pranav Mohanlal (Mohanlal’s son), Arjun, Suniel Shetty, Prabhu, Manju Warrier, Suhasini, and Keerthi Suresh, amongst others.

From the point of view of the film’s massive scale, production values, and the creative collaboration between Mohanlal and Priyadarshan, ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ is somewhat reminiscent of the actor-director duo’s 1996 historical drama ‘Kaalapani’ which revolved around the brutal lives of prisoners at the infamous Cellular Jail.

‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ has already bagged three National Film Awards for the Best Feature Film, Best Special Effects, and Best Costume Design categories. And the trailer further demonstrates that the film is bound to be a rare blend of grand visual spectacle with substance and has blockbuster written all over it.
