It was in June 2020 that a reboot of one of the highest-grossing film series of all time was first announced. Headlined originally by actor Johnny Depp from the very first film, two new projects were said to be in development at Disney, with one of the reboots to be led by ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’ star Margot Robbie. Now, from the actress’s own admission, it seems her project has got shelved!
It was in a talk with the actress for a Vanity Fair cover story that the actress updated fans regarding the update of the film. The movie was poised to have more of a female-led cast than the original films, with the movie to be written by her ‘Birds of Prey’ screenwriter Christina Hodson. But what happened that must have caused this to happen? Social media has one answer- Johnny Depp.
You would have to be living under a rock if you haven’t heard the news regarding Johnny Depp’s legal battle with his wife Amber Heard. The fans of the actor have been actively supporting him on social media and were not so courteous of Disney’s decision to reboot the film without him. Even today, the love and support for the actor remain intact.

Good it's not pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp anyway

That being said, while it may have been a factor, can it be called the only one? Not really.
Hollywood has been as of late rebooting a lot of popular franchises with a majorly female-lead cast without being able to replicate the box office success, often flopping in theatres. But would having a female cast lead automatically to the film underperforming in theatres? No- if in normal conditions, that is, the movie is good( Ocean’s 8). Yes- if the movie’s script is just a mess of woke political ideas trying to be passed on as entertainment, with the ‘Ghostbusters’ being a good example. Even the originally female-led ‘Charlie’s Angels’ reboot flopped miserably. Add to that the fact that support for Depp grows with each day, it’s understandable if the studio thought a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie may not have been a great plan in the current circumstances.
