The much-awaited Netflix Marilyn Monroe biopic film titled ‘Blonde’ has reportedly (via Variety) been pushed to 2022 from its previously scheduled release in the year 2021. Although the precise date of the film’s release is not yet revealed.
There was an unsaid suspicion about the news as a couple of months back, Cannes film festival director Thierry Fremaux had stated that he had invited ‘Blonde’ for festival screening but streaming giant Netflix had declined.
‘Blonde’ is a fictionalized account of the iconic Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe and is based on the book of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. The film will feature Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas in the titular role alongside Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, and Bobby Cannavale. However, this is not the first time Oates’ novel has been adapted for the screen as another made-for-TV movie ‘Blonde’ was made way back in the year 2001. That film starred Australian actress Poppy Montgomery in the titular role.
The forthcoming ambitious Netflix project has ostensibly been under development by the director Andrew Dominik since the year 2010. The filmmaker, who has earlier helmed films such as ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’ and ‘Killing Them Softly’ besides directing few episodes of the television series ‘Mindhunters’, is known for his fascination with Marilyn Monroe. Earlier, the central character was supposed to be played by Naomi Watts and later Jessica Chastain was roped in. However, the production could not kick-off because of financial constraints.
Eventually, in the year 2019, Ana de Armas was finalized to play the lead role. The actress is known for her roles in ‘Knives Out’, ‘Blade Runner 2049’, and will next be seen in James Bond’s next film ‘No Time to Die’.
