Talking about one of the more controversial films in recent times, “Miller’s Girl” has stirred up considerable debate, particularly with all the outrage and trolling on social media. The film has certainly garnered its fair share of fan rage. During its theatrical run, many fans felt that Martin Freeman’s chemistry with Jenna Ortega didn’t quite click, at least from their perspective.
The main issue fans had with the film was the significant age gap of 31 years between Freeman and Ortega’s characters. From a cinematic perspective, this seems like an absurd reason to shower hate on a film, especially considering that the erotic thriller does not present such a relationship as ‘cool’ or endorse it in any way.
To address these concerns, Martin Freeman stepped out to clarify certain matters.
Any erotic thriller is expected to have intimate scenes, which upset a plethora of fans, especially when it came to the romantic angle, with some even accusing it of promoting pedophilia.
Morgan Freeman emphasized to The Times that “Miller’s Girl” is mature and complex, stressing that depicting a potential affair between characters with a significant age gap doesn’t mean endorsing it.
He lamented how challenging narratives can be misconstrued by public perception. Freeman compared this to actors like Liam Neeson in “Schindler’s List,” where portraying a role doesn’t imply endorsement of the subject matter.
Even the film had an intimacy coordinator to ensure things were comfortable.
“There were many, many people throughout this process engaging with (Jenna) to make sure that it was consistent with what she was comfortable with, and she was very determined and very sure of what she wanted to do.”
Arjona later added, “I’m hyper-aware of both my talent and making sure that we’re consistently checking in and that at no point are any of their boundaries being surpassed.”
It was later confirmed that the filmmakers shot multiple scenes and used them during the screening to gauge what was more appropriate for the film.
“We shot different variations of how they wanted to shoot these scenes so that audiences could watch them at test screenings to see what was too much,” she added.
