If 2020 is the year where Marvel “decided to give us – the audience members and fans, a break”, 2021 is going to be the year where Marvel will be “shoving superheroes by the bucket loads down our throats”. Due to the global pandemic, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Phase Four didn’t get its chance to launch this year, back in May 2020 with Black Widow. Another one of their 2020 projects also had to be scrapped for the same reason – the much awaited Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
So for next year, Marvel has decided to come out, guns blazing with 10 major MCU projects – four superheros films and six television series. The four movies are expected to be released theatrically around the world while the other six web series will be premiering on Disney+ Hotstar in India. This is exciting, of course, to most moviegoers and fans as Marvel has been releasing a lot of good movies over the last 10 years and we are expecting movies (and series) of similar quality to grace the screen (both the big and small) in 2021.
But the sudden influx of 10 projects can be an issue, especially with the splitting of MCU from just movies to movies and television series. Keeping up with all Marvel projects will be a huge ask for any basic movie watcher, so this means that Marvel has decided to cater directly to their fans rather than the entire movie watching audience. Again, normally this would be a bad thing, catering to just a “niche” crowd, but as the box office numbers of Avengers: Endgame showed, Marvel has a fervent following around the globe and can afford to do just that.
WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…?, Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye are the web series that are expected to be released in 2021 in Disney+ Hotstar, with every actor (from the previous films) set to reprise their roles. Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals and the untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel will be the films that will release in theaters next year.
