Diehard fans of Marvel and DC comics-based movies might already be aware of last year’s statement made by James Gunn, who is perhaps the only filmmaker to have directed films belonging to both these universes (‘The Suicide Squad’ & ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’). In his reply to a Twitter user regarding his dream Marvel/DC crossover project, Gunn’s words were “King Shark, Rocket, Weasel, & Groot.” The post grabbed many eyeballs at that time.
While many of us may think that a Marvel-DC crossover seems like a virtual impossibility at least in the near future, Marvel top brass Kevin Feige’s latest comment (via Comicbook) might make your think otherwise. Fiege had stated that “Well, look, my standard answer to things are ‘never say never.’ I never thought we’d get this far. James has not brought that up, James is deep in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will begin filming before the end of this year. Having finished the spectacular The Suicide Squad and selling that movie, he’s well underway of prep on Guardians 3.”
However far-fetched it may sound, the words ‘Never Say Never’ seems to be enough as a ray of hope for the fans to expect for a possible Marvel-DC crossover film or television series. Moreover, recently, James Gunn had yet again sparked the imagination of fans globally when he revealed through a Tweet that he had a casual talk with Marvel & DC executives about the crossover and that although unlikely, it’s not an impossibility either.
In the comic book world, the first DC/Marvel crossover comic ever published was ‘Superman vs The Amazing Spider-Man’. Its sequel ‘Superman and Spider-Man’ was jointly published a few years later by Marvel and DC. Another popular crossover ‘Marvel vs DC’ featured dream fights like Hulk vs Superman and Captain America vs Batman, etc.
To witness these comic book crossovers come alive on the screen would certainly be a treat for the fans worldwide. However, with no concrete news in sight, the ambitious project still feels like a distant dream. But as Kevin Feige has himself said – ‘Never Say Never’.
