It was announced last year that a ‘Thunderbolts’ movie was in the works under the ambit of Phase-5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe aka MCU. The film is slated to release in theatres on 26th July 2024, that is, a couple of months after ‘Captain America: New World Order’ comes out. And the filming schedule for Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ movie is set to commence this year in June.
In an interesting development, Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ movie has now got a new writer. The superhero film, whose script was earlier being drafted by Marvel veteran Eric Pearson, will now be re-written by Lee Sung Jin. The Korean filmmaker is the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s upcoming revenge-based dark comedy series ‘Beef’. ‘Thunderbolts’ will be Lee’s first feature film project as a writer, and a big one.
And in doing that, Lee Sung Jin will collaborate again with ‘Beef’ director Jake Schreier, who is also directing Marvel’s multi-starrer superhero flick. Lee will also reunite with ‘Beef’ lead actor Steven Yeun, who has been cast in ‘Thunderbolts’ in a mystery role.
In Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’, the members of the titular anti-hero team would consist of Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova aka Black Widow, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker aka U.S. Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, and Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost. Moreover, after making his debut as Thunderbolt Ross in the upcoming ‘Captain America: New World Order’ movie with a relatively smaller screen time, Harrison Ford will appear in a more substantial role in the ‘Thunderbolts’ movie.
Although the precise plot details for the ‘Thunderbolts’ movie are being kept under the wraps, the film’s plot will ostensibly focus on the team of anti-heroes / reformed supervillains, who are teamed up and sent on various missions. The film’s underlying idea is somewhat akin to DC’s anti-hero Suicide Squad, which was recently made into a critically acclaimed film by James Gunn. So, the potential for the ‘Thunderbolts’ movie is immense. Let’s see how Marvel capitalizes on the exciting concept.
