It seems like Kevin Feige and his team finally realised that there is something wrong with Marvel Studios’ TV department. The writers’ strike forced the studio to pause Daredevil: Born Again’s shoot in mid-June. This gave Feige a chance to review the footage of some episodes. After his critical evaluation, he declared that the show was not working. As a result, the studio quietly removed Matt Corman and Chris Ord from their writing duties, and directors for the remainder of the series in September this year.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel is looking to creatively reboot ‘Born Again’, which involves the studio hunting for new helmers and writers.
The ongoing effort of revamping Daredevil: Born Again shows how bad Marvel’s TV department is working right now. The problems with the studio’s ‘a bit unusual’ strategy with TV shows were significantly visible in Secret Invasion.
Marvel Studios does not adhere to the conventional TV-making formula, which encompasses filming the pilot first and then working on the rest of the episodes. Instead, Marvel shoots all the episodes of their big-budget shows. In addition, the studio executives believed that it would be more beneficial to hire movie executives as showrunners for their shows instead of hiring traditional showrunners. And the most painful scenario here is Marvel’s strategy for going straight to reshoots if something does not look or work right.
Daredevil was a key jewel in Netflix’s crown. When talents like Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio joined the MCU, fans’ expectations for their reunion in a Disney+ series went sky-high. And we cannot blame them.
There were many reasons to fire the writing duo of Corman and Ord. They focused more on the show’s legal procedural side rather than balancing it with exhilarating and bloody action sequences, completely departing from Netflix’s strategy. In addition, Cox was supposed to show up in the full Daredevil costume in the fourth episode.
However, THR has also revealed that Marvel will only partially get rid of Corman and Ord. It means the duo will remain a part of the show as executive producers.
So far, Daredevil: Born Again is the only MCU show that has endured the procedure of reboot. It is good that Marvel is actually planning to creatively reboot the series, especially after fans’ poor response to Secret Invasion. Let’s hope that they do not mess up the show this time. Stay tuned for more updates.
