Iman Vellani has been cast as Ms. Marvel AKA Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager living in New Jersey. Ms. Marvel came out in comics in 2014, and was Marvel’s first Muslim Superhero. And now Ms. Marvel, which is going to stream on Disney+, is going to be Marvel’s first Muslim superhero on screen.
Kamala Khan is a shapeshifter, who has the ability to alter the size of her body and body parts. Unlike Antman, she can change the size of her body parts individually and constantly uses her hands to defeat villains, by making them humongous. She is said to have gained her powers through an explosion which created “In-humans”. We do not know how Marvel is planning to incorporate this event, but we can’t wait to find out in the show.
The web series will be one of the several shows coming out which will be linked with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and Kevin Feige has confirmed that Ms. Marvel will have a greater role to play in the MCU. Along with Ms. Marvel, Tatiana Maslany starrer ‘She-Hulk’ and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury have all gone into the production stage, while WandaVision is set to premier later this year.
This marks Vellani’s first major Hollywood production. But she has been in the news before, for helping to diversify the industry. Last year in the Toronto Film Festival, as part of the New Wave Committee, she helped in adding special tags to films, which the committee believed would resonate with their peers.
The series will be directed by Belgian duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, as well as Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon.
