While the DC fanbase was anxiously awaiting HBO’s The Penguin series, no one could have imagined that this Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti starrer would become one of the greatest comic book TV series of all time. Yes, it is that good—IGN, we haven’t forgotten what you did! The show surprised and shocked many fans in equal measure, and its highly anticipated follow-up, Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, will continue Oswald “Oz” Cobb’s journey.
Reeves recently spoke with Digital Spy about the second film, where he revealed how the events of the original 2022 movie have affected Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne and explained why he was absent from The Penguin.
“This was a time of great turmoil in the city, it’s literally the week after what happened. Much of the city is in desperation, so police can’t get everywhere, there’s crime everywhere, it’s a very, very dangerous time.”
Reeves also noted, “[Batman’s] out there trying to grapple with the aftermath of everything that happened, which to some degree he blames himself for.”
Batman gave everything he had to stop The Riddler (Paul Dano) from wreaking havoc in Gotham City in the first film. Despite his best efforts, however, Riddler managed to flood the entire city after destroying the seawalls with bombs. His followers, dressed like him, attempted to kill The Caped Crusader and Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), during the movie’s final moments. Batman ultimately saves Selina and the people in the arena but fails to protect the city from the floodwaters. He soon realises that his battle with Riddler has left Gotham in ruins.
Many fans wondered where Batman was during Cobb’s criminal uprising. It seems we finally have an answer. The turmoil, chaos, desperation, and disappointment among Gotham’s citizens have reached new heights, making The Dark Knight’s job of protecting the city increasingly difficult. This may have led him to question whether he truly deserves to don the cape and fight the bad guys alone. Is Gotham worth saving?
Gotham’s descent into chaos has empowered Cobb and his criminal empire. Batman, burdened by his own demons, has struggled to effectively combat this rising threat. However, as Cobb reaches the pinnacle of his power, he inadvertently triggers the wrath of The Dark Knight. A battle between good and evil—between Batman and The Penguin—is imminent.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II is scheduled to hit theaters on October 2, 2026. Stay tuned for more updates.
